Seven Steps For Keeping Teeth Healthy

Maintaining healthy teeth is essential not only for your oral health but also for your overall well-being. The state of your oral health can offer clues about your general health and sometimes, problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body. Here are seven vital steps to ensure your teeth remain healthy for a lifetime.

1. Brush Twice a Day

Brushing your teeth twice a day is a fundamental step towards maintaining healthy teeth. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing for two minutes, twice daily. It helps to remove plaque and food particles that accumulate in between your teeth and gums.

2. Floss Daily

While brushing is essential, it does not remove all the food particles or plaque from between your teeth. Flossing can help you reach these tricky areas and reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease.

3. Regular Dental Check-ups

Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleaning. The dentist can detect early signs of cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and other dental issues. They can then provide appropriate treatment or preventive measures.

4. Eat a Balanced Diet

Your diet plays a significant role in your dental health. A balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, protein foods, calcium-rich foods, and whole grains provide essential nutrients for optimum oral health.

5. Limit Sugary Drinks and Snacks

Sugar converts into acid in the mouth, which can then erode the enamel of your teeth. These acids are what lead to cavities. So, limit your consumption of sugary drinks and snacks.

6. Don’t Smoke or Use Tobacco Products

Smoking or using tobacco products can stain teeth, cause gum disease, and lead to oral cancer. If you smoke or use other tobacco products, consider quitting. Not only will you have better oral health, but you’ll also have better overall health.

7. Protect Your Teeth

Protect your teeth from injury. Wear a mouthguard or full-face helmet when playing sports. Avoid chewing ice, popcorn kernels, and hard candy, all of which can crack a tooth.
